Born in New York City, Sigourney Weaver graduated from Stanford University and went on to receive a Masters degree from the Yale School of Drama. Her first professional job was as an understudy in Sir John Gielgud’s production of “The Constant Wife”.
Sigourney Weaver made her motion picture debut in 1979 in Ridley Scott’s “Alien”. She had then starring roles in many other films, including Ivan Reitman’s “Ghostbusters” (1984), Mike Nichols’ “Working Girl” (1988), Ridley Scott’s “1492, Conquest of Paradise” (1992), Roman Polanski’s “Death and the Maiden” (1994), Jon Amiel’s “Copycat” (1995), Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s ”Alien – Resurrection” (1997), Ang Lee”s “The Ice Storm” (1997), Scott Elliott’s “A Map of the World” (1999), M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Village” (2003), Dan Harris’ “Imaginary Heroes” (2004, Marc Evans’ “Snow Cake” (2006) or Douglas McGrath’s “Infamous » (2006). Sigourney Weaver received in 1986 her first Best Actress Academy Award nomination for her performance as Officer Ripley in James Cameron’s “Aliens” and her second two years later for her role as naturalist Dian Fossey in Michael Apted’s “Gorillas in the Mist”.
In addition to her film credits, Sigourney Weaver has also taken time to shine on the stage. She started out on off-Broadway in Christopher Durang’s “The Nature and Purpose of the Universe”, “Titanic” and “Das Lusitania Songspiel”. She received in 1985 a Tony Award nomination for her role on Broadway in “Hurlyburly” directed by Mike Nichols.
In 2008, she appeared on the screen in Michel Gondry’s comedy “Be Kind Rewind” and Pete Travis’ “Vantage Point”, co-starring Deenis Quaid and Forest Whitaker.
