Mustapha Derkaoui stands out as a unique Moroccan filmmaker. Although some critics believe that he has portrayed his own self, his own life and personal development, in his films, he has not relied too heavily on fiction and has never given his actors free rein. Instead he has followed his own path and provided highly personal images. As a result he has often struggled and made terrible sacrifices to make his films, which best illustrate his vision of loneliness and suffering.
Born in Oujda in 1944, Mustapha Derkaoui earned his degree at the Casablanca Academy of Dramatic Art. From 1962 to 1963 he completed his Master in cinematography at the Paris IDHEC (Film School) and then attended a course in filmmaking at the National Film and Theatre School of Lodz, Poland, in 1965. In 1973, he joined the Moroccan Cinema Centre which he left two years later.
